Perth Amboy, NJ AC Question: What Are Some Common Air Conditioning Upgrades?

Tuesday, May 21st, 2013

If you’re looking for some ways to breathe new life into your air conditioning system before the summer starts, then you might like to consider installing an upgrade. The following cost-effective upgrades are great ways to improve your cooling without replacing your system. If you’re looking not only to improve your AC’s performance and energy efficiency, but also your indoor air quality, then you can count on York equipment. For over 130 years, York has provided the world with some of the finest HVAC systems. We practically invented the industry. So give your local York dealer a call today if you’re in need of some common air conditioning upgrades in Perth Amboy, NJ.

  • Programmable thermostat: One of the simplest upgrades you can make in your home is to install a digital, programmable thermostat. This is a great way to boost the energy efficiency of your home. It not only allows the adjustments to the temperature to occur gradually, but it also gives you full control over what temperature you need it to be whether you’re there or not. You can ensure that your AC is off after you walk out the door to go to work, and that it’s on at least an hour before you get home.
  • Zone control system: A zone control system is another great way to improve the energy efficiency of your home. It involves installing electronically controlled dampers at strategic points in your ductwork, thus dividing your home into zones. Each of these zones can be individually controlled by its own thermostat, so you can prevent disagreements about temperature and avoid a one-temperature solution for your entire home.
  • Energy recovery ventilator: An ERV, or energy recovery ventilator, integrates directly with your existing air conditioner to provide fresh air while minimizing the energy loss associated with ventilation. Considering how much poor indoor air quality can affect your home comfort, it may be an upgrade worth considering as we move into the cooling season.

If you’re looking for cost-effective upgrades to your air conditioner, make sure you hire a qualified AC contractor. Call your local New Jersey York dealer today to learn more about how we can improve your Perth Amboy, NJ home.

How Different Energy Efficiency Ratings Work

Monday, May 13th, 2013

Have you wondered what those acronyms on bright yellow labels mean? Are you looking to make sure that your next AC or heater is highly energy efficient so that you can cut down on your monthly energy bills no matter what the outside temperature is? Knowing how the different energy efficiency ratings work is a great way to make sure that your home is heating and cooling effectively. York is the industry leader in performance and energy efficiency. Many of our models are at the top of their fields in efficiency ratings. In this post, we’d like to explain briefly what several of the most prominent energy efficiency ratings work. Call your local New Jersey York dealer today for more details.

  • SEER: Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratio is the rating defined by the Air Conditioning, Heating and Refrigeration Institute. It estimates the ratio between electrical energy input and cooling output over the course of a single cooling season. It is given to all air conditioners. The current minimum standard is 13 and Energy Star rated ACs (including heat pumps) must be at least 14.5. While this is a useful barometer for new system installation, it does not take into account other important energy efficiency factors like home insulation and how much direct sun your home receives during the summer months.
  • AFUE: Annual Fuel Utilization Efficiency is the rating given to furnaces, water heaters, and other types of heating systems. It attempts to measure the actual, annual thermal efficiency of the equipment. It works in percentages; for example, an Energy Star rated gas furnace must have an AFUE of 90% or greater, which means that it only wastes about 10% of its energy during the combustion process.
  • HSPF: Another energy efficiency rating you may come across concerns only heat pumps. Heating Seasonal Performance Factor seeks to account for the ratio between electrical energy input and total heating output during a typical heating season. Because heat pumps operate as both heating and cooling devices, they tend to more than one type of energy efficiency rating.

We hope this helps to give you some idea about how these ratings work. Call your local New Jersey York Dealer today for comprehensive air conditioning services.

East Brunswick, NJ Air Conditioning Guide: Components of an Air Conditioning System

Monday, April 29th, 2013

Many of our customers are curious as to how a York air conditioner actually works and what it’s made of. For that reason, we’d like to review some of the components of an air conditioning system so that you can better understand what goes on when you adjust the thermostat. For more information about the excellence of York air conditioners, call your local York Dealer today!

  • Compressor:  It pressurizes and controls the refrigerant flow as it circulates through the expansion valve and coils. There are various types of compressors on the market today, but York’s dual-stage compressor makes it one of the quietest and most effective around. The compressor sits within the weatherized housing of the outdoor unit.
  • Condenser: The condenser coils wrap the inside of the outdoor unit. The purpose of the condenser coils is to condense the hot gas refrigerant that comes out of the compressor highly pressurized. It does this with assistance from a large extractor fan that pulls in the outside air. The heat of the refrigerant, being much higher than the outside temperature, thus shifts into the outside air. The liquid refrigerant then moves to the expansion valve.
  • Evaporator: After being cooled by the expansion valve, the cool liquid refrigerant then moves into the indoor unit where it circulates through the evaporator coils. When warm indoor air  blows over the cool refrigerant, the latter evaporates, absorbing the thermal energy of the air, and making the air cool in the process. This cool air is then returned to your home by means of the blower fan in the air handler.
  • Thermostat: While small, your thermostat is an important component of your air conditioning system, which can a big impact on system efficiency. Install a programmable thermostat for more energy-saving options.

We hope this gives you a better idea about how your AC works. For more information, call your local New Jersey York Dealer today!

Choosing an Air Conditioner in New Jersey

Monday, April 1st, 2013

Purchasing a new air conditioning system is a great way to add value to your home while improving comfort levels and reducing cooling costs. If you have never purchased an air conditioning system before, or if you have not done so in recent years, you may be surprised by the sheer amount of options available for installation in your home. If you feel a bit overwhelmed, don’t worry. A professional air conditioning installation technician can help you find the right air conditioner for your home and personal cooling habits. Here are some tips for choosing an air conditioner from your New Jersey York Dealer.

First of all, it is absolutely necessary that you choose an air conditioning system that is appropriately sized for your home. If your air conditioner is not the right fit for your living space then you cannot expect a high quality performance from the system. If it is too small it will struggle to achieve target temperatures beyond its capabilities. If it is too large then it will short cycle frequently, as it brings temperatures down too quickly. This puts unnecessary strain on your AC, leading to increased risk of damages. It also can reduce indoor air quality, as your air conditioner will not be able to dehumidify air as well.

There is also the matter of deciding which type of air conditioner is right for your home. If you have existing ductwork, for instance, you may want to stick with a split central AC. When properly installed and maintained these systems are quite efficient and very effective. A heat pump also uses ductwork to distribute air, and is a great option for those homeowners concerned with the efficiency of their system and its environmental impact.

However you decide to cool your home, a professional air conditioning technician can help ensure that you make the right choices. Keep this information from the New Jersey York dealers in mind, and you will be able to keep your home cool and comfortable throughout the summer months. Contact a local air conditioning installation company you can count on for more information.

Springtime Air Conditioning Maintenance in Roxbury Township, NJ

Monday, March 25th, 2013

There’s no better time for air conditioning maintenance than spring. The integrity and effectiveness of your air conditioning begins to feel a bit more pressing in April than during a snowstorm in January. Any system in your home will eventually require minor repair here and there, but routine maintenance of your cooling system can help to minimize the risk of major repairs, extend the system life, and also improve energy efficiency. That means energy savings during the hottest times of the year. For more information about air conditioning maintenance in Roxbury Township, NJ, call your local New Jersey York Dealer today!

Here are some things you can do to during your springtime air conditioning maintenance:

  • Regularly clean or replace your air filter. This should be the first thing on your list. When they get dirty or even clogged, air filters reduce the flow of cool air, trap cold air inside the air handler, and decrease your energy efficiency. This is one of the easiest improvements to make to your cooling system, and one that you should do once a month during the summer.
  • Keep your outdoor unit clean. It’s probably been a while since you last went outside to check on you’re the outdoor unit of your AC, which holds the compressor and condenser. During the course of the year, dirt and debris can quickly accumulate inside, which can lead to seized motor parts, dry bearings, damaged fan blades, and ineffective cooling. Make sure that your outdoor unit is clean so that your AC is ready for summer.
  • Schedule an annual check-up. The best thing you can do for your air conditioning system is to schedule an annual check-up with your local heating and cooling expert. While there are a couple cleaning duties you can undertake by yourself, there are a number of specialized tasks that should be left to the pros like tightening connections, checking refrigerant levels, testing the electrical system and so on.

Get started on your air conditioning maintenance this spring with a comprehensive tune-up by a local York dealer in Roxbury Township, NJ.

New Jersey Air Conditioning Guide: Why Fix Your Ducts Before Installing AC

Monday, August 13th, 2012

Air ducts are an important part of a forced air or central AC system, whether you live in Sayreville or Stafford.  When a new air conditioner is being installed it is important to have the current ductwork system inspected and fixed prior to the installation.

Fixing Ducts Before an AC Installation

After you install your new York air conditioner, you will have a great unit that efficiently cools the air that passes through it for use in every room of your home or office.  However, if that air then must pass through a duct system that is full of holes, cracks, or disjointed sections, then all that energy savings you paid for by getting the new higher-efficiency air conditioner have gone to waste as cold air spills into unused space such as behind walls and in crawlspaces.  It is a big energy waster that could be easily prevented by having ducts fixed.

Fixing ducts before an AC installation will give you the opportunity to have an air conditioning professional do a proper duct inspection to check for anything that might waste that preciously cooled air.  Leaky ducts will become sealed ducts and disjointed ducts will be repaired.  Any problems with where the air is flowing will be addressed such as cool or hot spots in the home and placement of vents will be addressed, moved where applicable, and additional vents will be added where necessary.

With a properly sealed and vented duct system you can rest assured that no matter what air conditioner you invest in, it will be working with a duct system that will not only send cooled air to the appropriate rooms, it will add to the overall efficiency of the air conditioner by up to 15%.  An added 15% efficiency to an already highly efficient new York air conditioner means a lot toward saving money on monthly utility bills.

Why You Can Not Neglect Proper AC Maintenance in New Jersey

Monday, August 6th, 2012

Hiring a professional York dealer for AC maintenance is essential to having an efficiently operation air conditioning system in New Jersey.  It will not only save you time in worry but save you money in the long run.  If you neglect proper AC maintenance you could be in for some big surprises.

Do Not Neglect AC Maintenance

AC maintenance is an important thing to remember to schedule every single year.  Since our York air conditioning systems are designed with a number of electrical and mechanical systems that all interconnect and work together to cool our indoor air, it is important that each internal system be properly cared for.

Without AC maintenance a wide range of air conditioner issues will begin popping up.

Filters need to be replaced or cleaned regularly, otherwise the air will not be able to flow through the AC itself, nor through the ducts as freely, but will instead be blocked by the dust and debris that is in its way.  This drastically decreases AC energy efficiency.

Evaporator coils and condenser coils will collect dust and dirt over time, which will also reduce air-flow through the coil which in turn reduced the ability of the coil to absorb heat.  This means that air which the AC creates will not be as cold as it otherwise might have been.

Clogged drain channels can affect indoor humidity levels, causing excessive moisture to accumulate and harmful indoor environments to be present.  A moist environment will breed mold and mildew and will also make the air feel uncomfortably muggy.

Refrigerant leaks that are not detected will eventually cause the air conditioner to stop cooling the air altogether.  This is a problem since the sole purpose of an AC system is to cool indoor air.

Without proper lubrication mechanical systems can run too hard and wear out quicker.  This means there will be more frequent AC repairs, as well as parts not working together as they should which can result in a shorter lifespan of your air conditioner.

When air conditioner maintenance is neglected any of these problems can arise.

With regular air conditioning maintenance every potential issue will be addressed before it has come about.  This way your York air conditioner can work as efficiently as possible at created comfortably air conditioned air in your space.

Contact your local York New Jersey Dealer and receive quality air conditioning maintenance in New Jersey.  Let us help you save money and keep your air conditioner working for as many years as possible.
